Robert E. Scully Gynecologic Pathology Fellowship

Philosophy of the Program
Depending on the needs of the department for the year (thus, may not be available every year), there are two forms of fellowship:

  • ACGME fellowship with 20 weeks of cosign GYN responsibilities and additional 16 weeks divided between other subspecialties (2 weeks each), 8 weeks of academic time, and 4 weeks of elective time.
  • Non-ACGME fellowship with signout responsibilities (acting at the level of primary staff pathologist), that can have added a second subspecialty at a lesser number of weeks.

This one-year fellowship is intended to provide advanced training in gynecologic pathology (with an option to do some obstetric pathology) in the tradition of excellence in this area established by the eminent pathologist for whom the fellowship is named. Strengths of the program include the following:

  • Signout or co-signout in the subspecialty area of gynecologic pathology as well as Frozen Section coverage. The fellow will benefit from the high number and great quality and diversity of the cases which will provide a solid foundation.
  • Study cases sent in consultation to the staff which are typically challenging and offer the opportunity to see unusual to rare diseases/tumors or common ones with unusual manifestations, broadening the fellow's knowledge base in gynecologic pathology. Consultation files of similar nature (over 30,000 cases) are also available for self-study.
  • Teach residents at different levels of training during Sign-out activities with the opportunity to present gynecologic pathology cases at the weekly resident teaching conference. Help with update of the gyn educational hub.
  • Present at the multidisciplinary gynecologic oncology tumor board conference and interact and provide informal teaching to residents and fellows in the Departments of Gynecologic Surgical Oncology, Medical Gynecology and Radiation Oncology.
  • Perform clinicopathologic or translational studies supervised by the gynecologic pathologists, but which may also be in collaboration with the Gynecologic Surgical Oncology, Medical Gynecology and Radiation Oncology departments.

Conferences

  • Surgical Pathology Conference (daily)
  • Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology Staff Consensus Conference (weekly)
  • Gynecologic Tumor Board (weekly)
  • Gynecologic Surgical Oncology teaching conferences (weekly-optional)
