MGH Pathology Visiting Scholar Program

MGH Pathology in collaboration with the MGH Center for Diversity & Inclusion

Overview

  • The MGH Pathology Scholar Program is an eight-week program for UIM medical students running from June 6, 2022 to July 29, 2022 as an advanced phase of the MGH Summer Research Training Program (SRTP).



Program structure and mentorship

  • Medical students will participate in a focused pathology experience tailored to their medical areas of interest. Students will participate in clinical / sign-out activity, and work on a translational research project.
  • Each student will be paired with an MGH Pathology faculty mentor, who will provide guidance for their research project and career guidance. Students will present their project to the MGH *Pathology Department at the conclusion of their clerkships.
  • Students will participate in weekly didactic sessions and be provided one on one mentorship for the pathology residency application process.
  • Social and career networking opportunities with SRTP program and MGH Pathology faculty and trainees
  • The program provides the following support during the eight week period of the program:
    • Housing near Harvard Medical School (no cost to student)
    • $5,000 living stipend for food and other necessities
    • Travel to and and from Boston will be reimbursed
    • Meals provided at didactic sessions

Eligibility

  • Ideally, the applicant should have a strong demonstrated interest in Pathology as a specialty career.
  • The MGH Pathology Scholar Program is open to medical students who meet the following criteria:
    • Underrepresented in medicine (UIM)
    • Completion of at least 2 core clinical rotations and passing score on COMLEX-USA Level 1 or USMLE Step 1
    • Attended/Attending a medical school in the US and Puerto Rico
    • US citizens or permanent residents If accepted, proof of health insurance will be required

  • Medical students will have the opportunity to work on a translational research project under the guidance and mentorship of an MGH Pathology faculty member.
  • In the process, medical students will have a special and unique opportunity to experience MGH Pathology, and to have MGH faculty become familiar with them as students.
  • The experience, especially the interactions with MGH pathology faculty and residents will strengthen their potential as applicants for pathology residency programs.
